Leather is the classiest and most beautiful furniture upholstery to have in your home. The surface is soft and gentle. Although leather is completely organic and natural, it still collects dust and gets dirty over time. There are certain steps to follow for cleaning leather furniture safely.

  • Before going elbow deep into the cleaning process, you need to vacuum the entire couch or armchair. There has to be absolutely no debris or dust particles on the surface to avoid scratching and damage.
  • You don’t need to apply cleaner on the whole surface so check which parts of the furniture need cleaning in order to save you time and money. A vinegar and water mixture is known to be the best homemade cleaning agent.
  • Dip a little bit of a clean cloth into the mixture and wring it out until it doesn’t release any water. Too much liquid could be messy so you want to get the cloth damp and not wet. You can wipe leather with the cloth, but you need to rinse the cloth off quite often to avoid spreading any dirt and grime.
  • Once you have finished with cleaning the dirty parts away, make sure you go over the fabric with a dry cloth to soak up any moisture.

Certain stains could happen at any given time so make sure you know exactly how to clean the stains.Oil or grease – You can clean oil away just like you would clean normal fabric, sprinkle baking powder over the liquid to absorb as much as possible. You can then vacuum up the powder or brush it away gently.

Ink – There might be a chance that ink could end up on your leather furniture. Use a rubbing alcohol to get rid of this stain. Don’t viciously rub the stain away, rather use gentle strokes until the ink is completely absorbed.

You can lighten up dark spots on your leather furniture with lemon juice and baking soda. Leave a pasty solution on the stain and gently wipe away after fifteen minutes.

Not everyone is able to clean their leather furniture properly. Sometimes the leather can be beyond repair and will need to be replaced. A professional furniture upholsterer can replace the damaged leather on the furniture. Also ask them for advice or instructions on how to properly clean your furniture in the future.

An important tip to remember is never to overdo any cleaning method. Too many acidic detergents applied to leather or organic materials will eventually wear it away.
